On today’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast, I’m happy to be joined by PLL Waterdogs goalie and Air Force alum Jason Rose.
Jason just finished his collegiate career at Air Force and signed with the Waterdogs as a free agent during the 2023 season.
Interestingly, Rose’s journey to becoming a goalie began unexpectedly. Starting as a midfielder, he found himself thrown in the cage during a game when the designated goalie failed to show up. Rose’s exceptional performance in the first half solidified his role as a goalie, a position he never relinquished.
Growing up, Jay never had a dedicated goalie coach. Instead, he honed his skills by facing high-quality shooters like Jacob Buttermore and Matt Moore, with whom he played at Garnett Valley.
Despite spending much of his early high school career as a backup, Rose embraced the experience, using it to become a better teammate and putting in extra work. This dedication paid off when he earned the starting position in his junior year.
Jason committed to Air Force during his freshman year of high school at Garnet Valley.
Rose’s decision was influenced by the opportunity to be a cadet and receive compensation.
Although the recruiting rules changed, he has no regrets, cherishing the people he met and the lacrosse experience, even if the team didn’t achieve the on-field success they desired.
Inspired by his older brother, who also played goalie at Air Force, and former Notre Dame goalie Connor Kelly, Rose has carved out his own path, now serving as the third goalie for the PLL Waterdogs. His journey from a backup in high school to a standout goalie in professional lacrosse showcases his resilience and determination.
Jason, a three-year starter with the Falcons, made a significant impact, concluding his time at Air Force with an impressive 424 career saves—the third-highest in program history.
His standout performance in the 2023 season saw Rose lead the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) with a .538 save percentage (ranking 12th in DI). Additionally, he secured second place with a 10.08 goals-against average, earning him a well-deserved All-Conference second-team selection. Notably, Rose was named Defensive Player of the Week twice during the regular season.
During his junior year, Rose dominated the ASUN with a .542 save percentage and ranked third in the conference with 12.07 saves per game, earning him a first-team All-Conference selection.
Jason is now hoping to continue his professional career with the Waterdogs and has his sights set on earning a roster spot for the Championship Series as Dillon Ward will be playing professional box lacrosse with the Colorado Mammoth.
I hope you enjoy this episode with Jason where we discuss topics such as how to be a good teammate, life as a student-athlete at Air Force, and the importance of positive self-talk.
