On today’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Penn goalie Emmet Carroll, a rising star in college lacrosse.
Carroll hails from Rye, NY, and has had an incredible journey to become one of the Ivy League’s elite goalkeepers.
I first noticed Emmet when he made a huge walk-off save to help the Quakers defeat Yale earlier this season.
As a youngster, Emmet was drawn to playing catcher in baseball, which helped him develop a natural affinity for facing projectiles coming his way. When playing street hockey with friends, he would often jump in the net, making it an easy decision for him to hop in the cage when he started playing lacrosse.
Carroll’s development was helped by his club team Predators Lacrosse Club coach Ryan Penner, who emphasized specialized positions and emphasized goalie training in their practices to help him become a foundationally sound goalie.
Additionally, Emmet trained with New York goalie legend and former PLL goalie Charlie Cipriano.
When it came time to choose a college, Emmet chose Penn thanks to their tremendous team culture and his relationship with a former coach whose son played at Penn. He was able to get advice on the culture and daily life of a Penn lacrosse player, so he was able to commit to a school where he could see himself being happy even if he wasn’t playing lacrosse.
Life at Penn really stood out to Emmet, and it was an easy decision to commit to once he took his official visit.
Growing up, Carroll’s favorite goalie was Niko Amato at Maryland, whom he admired for his game, even as a smaller guy, and his ability to take up space in the cage.
Carroll has broken onto the scene as one of the Ivy League’s elite goalkeepers, making a name for himself on the national level this season. He currently ranks third among Ivy goaltenders in save percentage (.539) and saves per game (13.86) and is fourth for GAA (11.72) while also making some pretty stellar saves in the process.
After an 18-save performance to open the season at Georgetown (in a game in which he stopped 72 percent of the Hoyas’ shots), Carroll was named to the USILA National Team of the Week on Feb. 20.
Atta boy, 2️⃣2️⃣!
After an 18-save performance vs. #8 Georgetown Saturday, junior goalie Emmet Carroll landed himself on @USILA_Lax's Team of the Week!
Emmet was also recently named Ivy League Player of the Week after his excellent performance in Penn’s 1-1 week with a 13-12 victory over then-#17 Saint Joseph’s last Wednesday in overtime fashion. In the two-game span, Carroll totaled 35 saves with a mark of 62.5 percent.
35 saves and save percentage of 62.5% this week earns goalie Emmet Carroll @IvyLeague Player of the Week honors!
He stopped a career-high 21 shots, saving at a 70% clip against Villanova on Saturday.

After learning to play goalie from scratch, I wanted to create a site where I could share what I learned with others so they too can become champions in the crease and in life.
